Mary Chapin Carpenter is an acclaimed country folk singer-songwriter whose career began in the 1980s when she was first signed with Columbia Records, and released the album Hometown Girl. The years to follow included the release of many hits, including the songs “Passionate Kisses” and “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her.” Carpenter’s newest album, The Things That We Are Made Of , was released in 2016.

Carpenter’s unique mix of folk and country styles has captivated listeners for decades, and has helped her sell more than 14 million records to date. The winner of five GRAMMY Awards, two CMA Awards, and a spot in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, Mary Chapin Carpenter continues to delight audiences across the country. She is joined at the Kauffman Center by special guest, GRAMMY winning up-and-comer Sarah Jarosz.

Michael McDonald’s career took off when he joined the Doobie Brothers in the 1970s. Adding his famous baritone to the group, McDonald pushed the band toward a polished jazz style. In 1982, McDonald left to begin his solo career. His album That’s What It Takes was released that year, featuring the song “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near).” In the years since, Michael McDonald has released several Motown albums and won five GRAMMY Awards.

Boz Scaggs got his start as a member of the Steve Miller Band. During his time with the band, the group released two acclaimed albums: Children of the Future and Sailor. Boz Scaggs then went on to pursue a solo career, releasing more albums and singles, including the famous songs “Lowdown” and “Lido Shuffle.” Scaggs’ most recent album, A Fool To Care, came out in 2015.

George Benson’s career began at the age of 10 when he recorded his first song under the name Little Georgie. His career took off from there, and the years to come were full of success for the guitarist. In 1976 Benson released his album Breezin’, which won him the GRAMMY Award for Record of the Year. In 2009, Benson received the highest honor for a jazz musician, Jazz Master as awarded from the National Endowment of the Arts.

Kenny G began his career at the age of 17 when he played with Barry White and his Love Unlimited Orchestra. Kenny G rose to fame with his album Duotones. The albums Breathless- a GRAMMY Award winner- and Miracles propelled his career further. At one point he held the record for the longest sustained note on a saxophone.

Celebrating the 40th anniversary of George Benson’s Breezin’ and the 25th anniversary of Kenny G’s Breathless, each artist’s set will feature classic album cuts and greatest hits, as well as songs performed together.

Famed guitarist George Benson joins up with acclaimed contemporary saxophonist Kenny G for The Breezin’ & Breathless Tour. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of George Benson’s Breezin’ and the 25th anniversary of Kenny G’s Breathless, each artist’s set will feature classic album cuts and greatest hits, as well as songs performed together. The two are each accomplished musicians in their own right, having amassed a collective 16 No.1 albums, 11 GRAMMY Awards and 125 million album sales.

She has won five GRAMMY awards and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. The history of the Vienna Boys Choir began centuries ago, when boys began singing at Vienna’s Imperial Chapel. The winner of three GRAMMY Awards and a certified Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts, Branford Marsalis’ career has spanned a variety of instruments and styles of music. Beginning as a saxophonist, today Marsalis is an accomplished composer, educator and musician. Collaborating with multiple music giants including Miles Davis and Harry Connick, Jr., among others, Marsalis made his solo debut at San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral, which is preserved on his album In My Solitude.

The Branford Marsalis quartet features Marsalis on saxophones, Joey Calderazzo on piano, Eric Revis on bass and Justin Faulkner on drums. The group, founded in 1986, has become a jazz staple, known for their cohesive sound and expressive melodies. The group was joined by guest vocalist Kurt Elling in December 2015, and their collaboration can be heard on GRAMMY-nominated the album Upward Spiral.

Join the Branford Marsalis Quartet and Kurt Elling for a night of jazz favorites at the Kauffman Center on Thursday, May 11.
