Regina Carter

Regina Carter
Violinist Regina Carter is considered the foremost jazz violinist of her generation. She has brought curiosity, passion, and a quest for beauty to every stop on her full musical journey. Recognizing Carter as an artist engaged in important creative work, the MacArthur Foundation named her one of its 2006 MacArthur Fellows, awarding her what is often known as a “genius grant.”

Southern Comfort
Her recent project “Southern Comfort” thematically connects Carter’s earlier albums exploring her musical heritage, which feature her mother’s favorite early jazz standards and celebrate the tradition of African music.
On her new album she explores the folk tunes her paternal grandfather, a coalminer, would have heard as he toiled in Alabama – and the project expanded to include other folk tunes of the region. “This disc was to pay homage to my family,” said Carter, “but it turned out to be so much more.”
