Thank you for your interest in the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. As a volunteer you have the opportunity to connect with your community, share your skills and learn new ones, and meet new people. In this role you’ll connect with people of all ages and backgrounds. Volunteering is a big commitment and it is important this opportunity best matches your interests and skills. In return for your time you’ll work in a fascinating environment with great people. You’ll also know you’re helping to create a unique experience that will surprise, delight, entertain, and educate tens of thousands of people each year.
- Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
- The majority of the volunteer positions involve working with guests of all ages. Applicants should be comfortable working with people.
- Volunteers must be committed to working in a team environment and treating team members and guests with dignity and respect.
- Volunteers are required to participate at least 12 hours a month.
- Volunteers are required to observe Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts’ dress, attendance and behavior policies.
- Volunteers give permission to Kauffman Center for Performing Arts to use your photo for publication and other Kauffman Center related purposes.
- Interviews and background checks are required for acceptance into the program.
- Applicants will be required to bring a driver’s license or photo ID to the interview.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and will remain on file for two years. Due to the volume of applications and available positions, we regret that not all applicants will be selected to participate. Please keep this page for your reference. Volunteer Job Descriptions
Please read the volunteer job descriptions below carefully and check any and all of the jobs for which you would like to volunteer on the form that follows.
Greeters
- Welcome guests, groups and tours to Kauffman Center.
- Provide general information and directions.
- Direct guests to the appropriate floor and entrance.
- Assist visitors with disabilities or special needs.
- Help with other problems or questions as they arise.
- Will be knowledgeable on facility and the day’s performance: length of performance, intermission, food and beverage service, valet, etc.
- Should be familiar with the Crossroads District and Downtown including restaurants, entertainment, area events and the main arteries leading to the interstates and thoroughfares.
- Greeters may be called upon to meet buses at the Plaza entrance, welcome the bus passengers to Kauffman Center and give instructions.
- Lead the bus passengers to their appropriate queuing or waiting area.
- Need to be familiar with bus parking locations and other information that the bus drivers may need.
- Greeters report 90 minutes before show time and are dismissed after the audience has left Kauffman Center.
- Greeters monitor an assigned area and assist with late arrivals and cleaning up said area as needed.
- Greeters will perform other duties as assigned.
Floor Attendants
- Ensure assigned area is clean and ready for the day’s performance.
- Welcome guests to the Kauffman Center and the performance.
- Address any guest comments or concerns.
- Oversee Ushers and Seaters as it relates to their assigned area.
- Will be knowledgeable on facility and the day’s performance: length of performance, intermission, food and beverage service, valet, etc.
- Should be familiar with the Crossroads District and Downtown including restaurants, entertainment, area events and the main arteries leading to the interstates and thoroughfares.
- Prepare exits for intermission and re-entry for the second act.
- Direct guest to the proper entrance.
- Keep any queuing lines orderly and moving smoothly.
- Interact with service providers and events.
- Floor Attendants report 90 minutes before show time and are dismissed after the remaining audience members have left the Kauffman Center.
- Floor Attendants monitor the floor and the entrance doors after the performance has started. Floor Attendants assist/address any late arrivals and assist with cleaning the assigned area as needed.
- Floor Attendants will perform other duties as assigned.
Ushers
- Welcome guests to the Kauffman Center and the performance.
- Check tickets to ensure the guest is here for the correct performance and at proper theatre entrance.
- Scan ticket using a hand held electronic device.
- Assist with wheelchair service, infrared hearing devices, etc, as needed.
- Address any seating issues or concerns.
- Will be knowledgeable on facility and the day’s performance: length of performance, intermission, food and beverage service, valet, etc.
- Should be familiar with the Crossroads District and Downtown including restaurants, entertainment, area events and the main arteries leading to the interstates and thoroughfares.
- Keep any queuing lines orderly and moving smoothly.
- Prepare exits for intermission and re-entry for the second act.
- Ushers report 90 minutes before show time and are dismissed after the remaining audience members have left the auditorium.
- Ushers also help monitor the doors after the performance has started to assist late arrivals and assist with cleaning up the seating area after the performance.
- Ushers will perform other duties as assigned.
Seaters
- Welcome guests to the Kauffman Center and the performance.
- Hand out programs and any other collateral materials as directed.
- Escort and/or direct the guest to his/her seat.
- Address any seating issues or concerns.
- Will be knowledgeable on facility and the day’s performance: length of performance, intermission, food and beverage service, valet, etc.
- Should be familiar with the Crossroads District and Downtown including restaurants, entertainment, area events and the main arteries leading to the interstates and thoroughfares.
- Assist the Usher with queuing lines.
- Perform pre-event walk through of the performance hall to ensure seats are clean and lint free, aisles are clean, seats are up, transfer seats are operational, row lights are on, etc.
- Prepare exits for intermission and re-entry for the second act.
- Seaters report 90 minutes before show time and are dismissed after intermission.
- Seaters perform other duties as assigned.
Gift Shop Attendants
- Assist guests in finding the item(s) that they are requesting, monitor the traffic flow, and answer questions.
- Act as cashier (cash handling, processing credit cards, gift cards) using a touch screen point of sale system.
- Inspect retail item in front of guest. Item should be clean, intact and meet the guest’s expectations.
- Explain and/or demonstrate the retail product.
- Handle transactions in a timely and professional manner.
- Ensure that merchandise is restocked and store is clean.
- Perform closing duties and prepare for next business day.
- Gift shop is open 90 minutes prior to performance and through the first intermission.
- Gift Shop Attendants perform other duties as assigned.
Ambassador Tour Guides

- Welcome guests, groups and tours to Kauffman Center.
- Tour Guides will lead regularly scheduled and special event tours.
- Will complete the training and qualification process for acceptance into the tour guide program.
- Will be knowledgeable on Kauffman Center programs and facility.
- Will commit to volunteer at least 48 hours per year.
- Will be a member of Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts’ Ambassadors program.
- Will be comfortable working with people of all ages.
- Tour Guides must be 18 years of age or older.
- Tour Guides should be hospitable, articulate, interactive, adaptable, and reviewable.
- Tour Guides may be called upon to meet buses at the Plaza entrance, welcome the bus passengers to Kauffman Center and give instructions.
- Tour Guides will perform other duties as assigned.
